Welcome!
We all were new, at one time, and we remember what it’s like. So we’ve provided the information below, knowing that it’s easier to venture into a new place when you know what to expect.
Our History
Heritage United Methodist Church encourages all people to pursue a lifelong, joyous relationship with Jesus Christ. Our history dates back to 1981, when our church began as a daughter church of Phillips United Methodist Church in Lakewood, CO. We first met in an elementary school, and then a junior high school. We were blessed to host our first worship service in our new Worship Center in 1984, which was later significantly expanded in 2004. Our sacred purpose is to be “Friends of Christ, and Friends to Each Other.” We invite everyone to “come and see” and to explore what it means to be a participant in this caring community. We welcome everyone with open hearts, open minds and open doors. So, whether you’ve never been to a church before, or if you have been worshipping God with others for years —- this is the place for you!
Our Worship Services Welcome Everyone
Today about 350 families are part of our congregation, and typically 200-250 people attend Heritage UMC each Sunday. We have dozens of volunteers working hard to make sure all first-time visitors are welcomed and encouraged.
Each Sunday we offer two distinct worship services that last about an hour: an earlier service at 9:00 am -10:00 am, and a later service at 10:30 am -11:30 am. Near the beginning of the worship service, the pastor will encourage everyone to greet the people sitting around you, but no one will single you out as a visitor. A printed worship bulletin and an overhead visual screen together help guide the congregation to participate in worship. Inside the worship bulletin is a colorful sheet of paper called the Share Note that everyone is invited to fill out; this communication tool helps us know how we can support you and offer you Christian friendship. Also, we don’t expect our visitors to give financially. So feel free to just drop your Share Note in the offering plate when it is passed down your row.
The earlier service has a more traditional flavor with thoughtful prayers; it features our vocal choir singing favorite hymns and spirited anthems accompanied by our pianist on a grand piano.
The 10:30 am service has a more contemporary sound featuring our praise band (including singers, guitars, and electronic keyboard) guiding us in hand-clapping music and inspiring songs. Special music of a wide variety is often included in both worship services. You will periodically enjoy handbells, violins, flutes, trumpets, vocal soloists, and even a harmonizing men’s quartet. The sermon of the week is the same for both worship services; it focuses on a scripture from the Bible and how the truth of that text applies to our spiritual and ordinary lives today.
Children are welcome to attend the entire worship service (even when they are wiggly!), or they may attend Sunday School. Adults should first accompany their children into worship, then after the children’s sermon, the children will be invited to follow the Sunday School teachers to the appropriate classroom. After worship, parents must go to the Sunday School classroom to sign their child out.
Family Room is Available
We also offer a sound-proof Family Room (accessed from our main lobby near the Sanctuary) if that is more comfortable for some families as they participate in worship.
We Offer Sunday School for all Ages
We offer a full set of Sunday School (spiritual growth) classes for ages 3 years old up to children in 5th grade during the 9:00 am worship hour, and classes for children (ages 3 years old up), youth (grades 6 to 12) and adults during the 10:30 am worship hour. Nursery care for children ages 3 years old and under is available during both worship hours.
Come as You Are
Our congregation spans a range of ages and backgrounds. You’ll see people in the congregation dressed in all styles—from jeans to business suits. Our pastors and vocal choir wear formal robes during the earlier service, while the pastors and musicians are dressed more casually for the later service.
Parking
We have lots of parking space in the church parking lot, and our congregation is also welcome to park in the Chatfield Senior High School parking lot nearest the church. There is a sidewalk and ramp connecting the school and church parking lots.
Questions on Sunday Morning
If you have questions about worship or Sunday classes, please ask the volunteers at the Guest Info Welcome Desk in our main lobby, or ask a greeter or usher.
Getting Connected
Getting connected at Heritage UMC is about forming Christian friendships with others. Those kinds of relationships take time to develop and grow. Attending worship services is a great way to begin meeting others, and we hope you will take time to linger after worship to share in Fellowship hour with coffee and snacks in our Fellowship Hall.
Next we invite you to deepen your connections with others by participating in a fellowship group, a musical group, a Bible study, or one of the many other activity groups available. We offer a variety of service opportunities to work together in serving others and God.
